Do ONVIF compatible PoE video doorbells exist?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 08:14 PM PST

    Hello,

I'm looking for an ONVIF compatible PoE video doorbell camera? Mine is wifi now and can only record in 30 second increments. Then has a 15 second cool off period then 30, then 15, then 30, etc. Very annoying. Anything that can record until motion stops?

Looking for advice for home security system after someone tried to break in.

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 11:36 PM PST

Hi, we had a scare when someone tried to break into our house: tried to kick the door down and broke a window. It's something that has rocked us and I know we need to get a home security system. I have no knowledge on this, I'm looking into it now, so be great to get any sort of advice you may have.

What I'm thinking we need - General alarm which will go off if the front and back doors are forced open - Alarm to go off if a window is broken - Sensor to be alerted if there's movement in the house at night (if this is a feature) - Sensor light for outside - Cameras for outside. If there a way of setting these so they either only record or notify me when there's movement in the backyard as I know that I could get compulsive and check them all the time if not which I don't want to do if I can help it as it could become obsessive.

I might have missed some safety measures you recommend so please do let me know and also which system or systems you think are best for these needs.

I figure getting a Ring too for the doorbell.

    Thanks so much!

Looking for advice on a security system

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 10:57 PM PST

    Alt account to avoid doxxing.

I am a computer science student who lives at home with my family. I am familiar with setting up home projects and dealing with software as it is all I've really done for the past 4 years.

Today our neighbor walked into our yard and pet our dogs while they were outside. My mother is panicking and wants a security system. Before letting me help her find one she put a down payment on ADT for them to come install their equipment. I convinced her to get her money back and that no matter what we are not doing ADT.

I live in upstate NY. She wants at least one outside camera on both sides of the house, some detection system on the doors with an alarm at night, and a way to remotely connect to the cameras. My budget is preferably less than $500. I don't like subscriptions if possible but if it is unavoidable or worth the money and not $59 a month.

I know she is overreacting but a home security system is something I was interested in getting and if it gets my moms paranoia to calm down and my own then I am okay with it. As long as it isn't $60 a month.

Edit: looking at ring and eufy and reolink

    Camera : brick wall mount

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 07:42 PM PST

Don't really like the idea of drilling holes in a brick wall....any alternative to that ? It's for an outdoor camera, but it will be under a roof (front porch) so a bit protected from the rain/snow.

Absolute noob and closing on a house

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 09:18 AM PST

Hello fam - I will be closing on a house soon and I know nothing about home security. I have lived in condos for the past 12 years so home security is pretty overwhelming for me.

What resources/suggestions can you"ll provide to start my home security journey?

Some of the things I would like to have is smart door locks that can notify me if I have left my main door or garage door open. I would also like a smart door bell. I am not too sure if I need a monitoring system but I am open to suggestions.

    Indoor/outdoor cameras with specific requirements

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 09:17 AM PST

I'm looking for some camera options with some specific criteria, and need some guidance because this market is flooded and nothing I've come across has been perfect.

    1) Power: 120v if possible, I have lines nearby most of the places I'd like a camera. They'd be coming from the attic, so receptacle powered concerns me.

    2) Storage: local if possible, pre-built if possible but with some effort I could maybe DIY

    3) Expandable - I'm looking at 3 spots for cameras, but may want to add later

    4) WiFi based with integration into eg Google or home assistant platforms.

Any good guides or suggestions? I'd probably need a bit more guidance on imagining a setup. Thanks in advance!

Possible to record to SD card first and then offload to NVR?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 12:00 PM PST

Are there any out of the box solution where it is possible to have the recordings saved to the SD card and then the NVR will get the data from there and save it into a hard drive? This is for wireless camera setup BTW, not hardwired POE or coax.

Reason is I see wireless cameras are quite unreliable as they may miss seconds at a time due to connectivity issues. So maybe having it record to an SD card first and then the NVR getting the data afterwards might improve the reliability.

Note I am using a wifi extender adapter to improve the 2.4 GHz signal, it helps but is not 100% stable as in a wired connection. Wired solution is not possible in my case as it is not possible to drill/run wires behind the walls.
