Need advice on best camera setup to catch a transient psychopath

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 12:04 PM PDT

    Hi,

I apologize if this already covered somewhere, but I am having to make up on a ton of work because of time lost to this situation and haven't had a lot of time to research.

Long story short this psycho transient guy has been bothering us and after being asked to leave us alone he came back and threw feces at my front door. While on the phone with the Police he came back and started throwing rocks at my house and broke out my front window with my 7 month old really close to where all the glass flew.

The Police actually found him within the hour and he is now in jail and charged with felony vandalism. Police told me he thinks my family is part of the Free Masons and something about us being his enemy. He is nuts. He also said he would continue to stop by my house when he is released so I went ahead and got a restraining order on him this week. I have little confidence that he is actually gonna to obey his restraining order though.

So I need a camera system that can do 2 things for me.

First, I need to clearly document his face if he walks on the sidewalk in front of my house which would be about 15-20 feet from where I can mount a camera. I think this would probably need to be constantly recording or have very good sensors and no delay for turning on. Bonus if he can be recognizable from across the street because that would still be within the 100 yards mandated in the restraining order.

Second, I want to mount cameras on both sides of my house and backyard in case he decides he wants to really mess with my family. These would be more to warn us that there is an intruder in my yard and hopefully give me as much time as I can to take care of the situation. So I don't think these would need to run constantly but they would definitely need to have a way to notify me over my phone really fast.

I am not trying to cheap out on this but value is much appreciated as I am not wealthy. Hoping to not spend more than 800 but will if I really need to.

I appreciate all of you advice and if you guys have any advice for stuff I haven't considered yet I'm all ears. I'm hoping this guy never comes back but if he does I want to be ready. Thanks!

Can anyone recommend a wifi door-open sensor connected to a security camera?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 02:33 AM PDT

I hope someone might know of a product like this...

I have a unit in an apartment building, and I want to be able to know specifically whenever the front door is opened and to get a phone alert to see who is coming or going. I only want it to record outside, not inside the unit.

I want to mount the camera in the apartment hallway up high out of reach above my entry door. I don't want a simple motion sensor camera because other people are walking by all day and I would get tons of useless alerts, but need some system with a secondary sensor/trigger that I could mount on the door frame on the inside that senses when the door opens and only then turns on the camera, and sends a notification via wifi to my phone or email, where I can view a photo or short video of what it saw.

So far I have found tons of door-open sensors and alarms but none with a camera, and tons of cameras but none with an integrated door-open sensor.

Has anyone found or made a system like this?

    POE camera app recommendations

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 10:15 PM PDT

    Hey everybody

I recently bought a home and the previous owner had 2 Amcrest POE cameras that he left with the buy. I've lived in the home for almost a year and a half and I've had it up to my eyeballs with the Amcrest app. Feels like it's from 1995. I have already paid for one year of cloud storage but if I find something else worth while I can forgo that money

So I'm looking to see if there's an app where I can view all my Amcrest cameras and maybe if I add a few more POE Ones tha aren't Amcrest I can see them all under one roof.

    Any suggestions?

I'm going crazy downloading all these apps on my iPhone that don't seem to work with them.

    Any help would be great!

Prevent flying bugs from triggering my flood lights at night

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 10:13 PM PDT

Just installed some floodlights and every few minutes, every night these bugs fly around them and they trigger. How I know is because my neighbor is complaining about my shining light waking him up periodically every now and then. We are on very good terms so it's not just them being annoying.

Would spraying insect repellent do anything?

Unconventional monitoring of Simon XTi via UPS network card

    Posted: 11 Aug 2020 12:29 AM PDT

This may be an unconventional idea but, as a cheap form of alarm self-monitoring, I'm wondering whether I can use my current alarm panel's contacts, connected to the environmental sensor of an Uninterruptible Power Supply's network card, to monitor for alarm activation remotely?

I've got a Simon XTi alarm panel and a CyberPower UPS with RMCARD205 and ENVIROSENSOR. The alarm panel has a HW1 I/O screw terminal that can be used for either siren or hardwired contact connections; it doesn't pass DC power. I have wires running from the alarm panel to my UPS. The environmental sensor on the UPS has four contact closures that can be used to monitor alarms, door switches, etc.

Since the alarm sends its status over the HW1 I/O terminal, I am thinking it may be possible to program the ENVIROSENSOR to read this change over the wire and send me an email alert, for example.

Has anyone done something similar? I'm just wondering if this has any chance of working before I spend a weekend futzing with it.

Thanks for your thoughts and experience!

    Victure PC540

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 07:04 PM PDT

Hello, I recently bought the Victure PC540 camera to watch my puppy while I'm gone. I haven't even been able to set it up and I was wondering if anyone could help me understand what's wrong.

In order to set it up you need an app and a 2.4G wi-fi (which I have). Then the instructions say to plug it in and wait for the red indicator light to blink. Then it says to put your phone close to the camera and wait for a ding-dong sound.

I have followed all the instructions and for some reason I never hear the ding-dong sound. It just continues to make an annoying chime sound (which seems to be normal), but it never changes sound. The light is blinking red, I have the correct wi-fi, and the camera itself seems to work fine (like it's not broken).

Has anyone else had this issue or know a video or article that specifically addresses this issue? Thanks.

    Understanding monitored security systems

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 05:27 PM PDT

I am a masters student at Full Sail University and I am currently working on a class project. For the Digital Marketing Masters program that I am in, the course I am currently in is centered around understanding a brand and conducting market research to build a full marketing strategy later on in my studies.

I am working to understand the residential monitored security and monitored fire detection market. This survey is designed so I can get a better understanding of what lead you to post about and purchase (or not!) a monitored security system.

I am also giving away five $50 Amazon gift cards for the time spent on the survey.

Camera Inside Garage if Floodlight Camera Installed Over Garage

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 11:02 AM PDT

    Hello All,

So I am working on setting up my home security system and I have a question.

Would a camera being installed inside my garage while I have flood light camera installed outside right on top of my garage be overkill?

I also have installed a Wifi garage door monitor system (which will tell me if my garage door opens and closes).

Should I be fine with just the floodlight camera over the garage and the wifi garage door monitor system or should I get a small camera in the garage?

Thank you in advance for the responses!

    Indoor security camera.

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 10:28 AM PDT

Want to get anan indoor security like a yi or something similar, more for checking on my dog making sure he's not getting up to any mischief. Do I need to worry about it being compromised or is there any steps other than setting up a unique ? Not really worried about it being watched but im not too tech savy when it comes to network security so i have no clue if im being paranoid about it somehow being used to steal my identity or something malicious.
