How hard is it to kick in a sliding door? Posted: 05 May 2020 07:58 PM PDT Im trying to secure my home as much as possible and one of the entrance ways that has always seemed like its the most vulnerable is the sliding glass door we have on our back porch. Its also the furthest entrance from my bed room which also makes me uncomfortable. I just bought pins to screw in place, we already keep a stick in the door and have taken other precautions to prevent the lock being tampered with and breaking in via sliding the door. Im wondering though, how hard is it to just kick in a sliding door? Im a large man and my gut says a few good swift kicks or slams with my shoulder and I might be able to get this thing off its hinges. My wife meanwhile thinks im insane and that a beer would struggle to knock that door in. Any other suggestions for securing this door are also appreciated. Happy to answer any questions to get an accurate answer ;) [link] [comments] |
What’s a good reliable POE camera? Posted: 05 May 2020 03:18 PM PDT So I'm in Australia and someone recommended NYX brand to me, is it any good? What else is good and reliable out there? Thx [link] [comments] |
How much should I be paying a company to install cameras at my place of business? Posted: 06 May 2020 01:41 AM PDT Hey guys, I run a restaurant and I'm currently trying to purchase and install 16 new cameras for my business. I just don't have the time to do the installations myself, so I've been in contact with a local company that does both sales and installation. I have no idea what to pay per camera for installation, I'd appreciate it if you guys could point me in the right direction. If you're interested in the details, the company is charging me $150 per camera (installation included) for the Dahua IPC-HDW4433C-A). I asked for the model number and googled it, and I see that it costs just $70 on Amazon and $50 on Alibaba. Seems like a massive ripoff to me. [link] [comments] |
WiFi Security Camera Recommendation To Watch Job Site From 200-250' Away Posted: 05 May 2020 10:05 PM PDT Building a new home and would like a camera to keep an eye on the build as well as to do a fun time lapse video when it's finished. Ideally I can find something nice/inexpensive enough to mount it on a pole about 200' away from the actual build to stay out of the way of construction (unless you tell me that's too far and I'll find a closer spot). I'm going to power this with a solar setup and get wifi to it from a Ubiquiti Unifi. I was looking at the Amcrest IP2M-858W, but it's pricey and maybe not what I need? Any help or advice would be awesome! [link] [comments] |
Unhappy with Arlo- looking for alternatives: parameters in the post... Posted: 05 May 2020 03:23 PM PDT We run a bunch of airbnbs. We use between 1 and 8 cameras depending on the area and how it is all laid out. We are unhappy with the hardware, the software, and the service. But, price is a huge factor- we simply can't pay MUCH more without killing our profitability. We have 40 cameras now and that appears to be an account size limit so if we are going to swap horses now is the time. Things we need: exterior offsite data storage night vision motion activated (or I guess just an awful lot of storage) audio remote viewing [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 May 2020 08:57 PM PDT I recently bought a house and this came with it. The house was built in 2006. Looks like it was previously wired for an old security system or something? I'm a novice here so any information on what this is and if it's still useable would be great. Thanks See photo [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 May 2020 08:29 PM PDT Home has contacts on all doors, glass break sensors (all working) and the keypad is a WatchPro 3,000. ADT gave me an estimate for a portable keypad (which is important to me so I can arm/disarm in bed and if alarm goes off, can see which door was opened), and they'd need to upgrade some of the boxes to match current technology supposedly, total was going to be about $260 + $42.99/mo monitoring. But lots of terrible reviews about ADT. Most likely would only use monitoring with a company for contract period then not use it anymore. I guess ultimately, I'd like that portable keypad so I can see notifications in the event of an emergency. I know a lot of setups have smart phone capabilities, but that only works as long as the system is monitored. Any suggestions on ADT or any other companies? [link] [comments] |
Can't access Amcrest PoE cameras anymore. Posted: 05 May 2020 08:22 PM PDT I got a new modem and router and now I can access my cameras. They're plugged into a Poe switch and they're getting power, but I don't see them on my network and I can't access them with the phone app either. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
Update to EyezOn / Envisalink app? Posted: 05 May 2020 09:33 AM PDT Does anyone know when EyezOn / Envisalink is going to update their app? While functional, visually the app is stuck in 2007, especially compared to some of the other apps marked at the same market. I remember seeing a while back they had posted a job position for an app developer. I've got a few EVL-4, and I'd honestly be willing to chip in $100 or $150 towards getting a new app. Screenshots: https://imgur.com/a/uaLc5Qi [link] [comments] |
Recommendations on Home Security System Posted: 05 May 2020 03:10 PM PDT I've done what feels like a lot of research trying to find the perfect home security system and I think I've narrowed it down to either Nest or Abode + Arlo. First a little info about the home. It's a 2,788 sq feet, 4 bedroom home with 6 windows on the ground floor. The doors include a front double door (single deadbolt Kwikset), a side door attached to the garage (Schlage), a door from the garage to the home interior (Schlage), and a rear sliding glass door. It has a previously installed ADT system (panel scw9057g-433), but I'm looking to go with a different system since it seems I can't convert this with alarmdecoder. I run home assistant and like tinkering with tech stuff. I have lots of automations for lights etc in my current apartment. So ideally, this alarm system would be able to be integrated with home assistant, but not rely on home assistant as a security system. Nest seems like a great option. It has great cameras, can get 24/7 monitoring through brinks. The apps are good, and doorbell + smart locks are part of the system. I think I could get everything I need (or at least a really good set to build off of) for around $2300. The cons are, it isn't immediately able to be integrated with home assistant. Might be able to get some of it working with the badnest plugin (currently works with my nest thermostat). But eventually should be able to when google opens their API. From what I found, it doesn't seem like a garage door sensor can be integrated with the security system. I'm unsure of the monthly cost. If I do get the 24/7 monitoring, do I still have to pay for Nest aware? Also, there's no monitoring for fire with Nest. The other option is abode. Seems like a good alternative I could get the hardware for around $600. But it seems like their cameras suck. Especially the outdoor cams. For that I was looking at arlo. 2 Arlo ultra cams is another $600. And I'd also need to buy a video doorbell and smart locks. So really not that much cheaper than the nest when all said and done. And on top of that, I'd be paying for 2 subscriptions. The good news is the system should work out of the box with home assistant, and I'd be able to add to the system using supported 3rd party devices. The arlo cams seem great, but don't have the same smart features as nest IQ, and they're battery powered. So that means I'm probably changing batteries monthly or even more frequently. Is there another option I should be looking at? Any thoughts on what I've outlined so far? Seems like I'll be making a compromise regardless of which system I choose, but is there anything I'm overlooking? Good/Bad experiences with either of the systems? Thanks in advance for any input and sorry about the wall of text. [link] [comments] |
Recommendation for doorbell-type camera with no/minimal input TV or tablet viewing Posted: 05 May 2020 05:11 AM PDT My family is trying to find a doorbell-style camera (like Ring) for an elderly relative. However, the relative has no technical knowledge and is unable to use a smartphone or tablet. Are there any companies offering a solution that will automatically display video on their smart TV (maybe PIP?) or a dedicated tablet for an end table (like Amazon Echo Show) when someone's at the door? We'd prefer to avoid a subscription service or spending more than $200-$300 or so, but I would be curious to hear what options are available regardless. The house does have wifi and I can run data cable if necessary. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Recommendation for indoor camera for small business Posted: 05 May 2020 09:10 AM PDT Hello, I have a small business where equipment is stored on one side of the an office. Because of covid, the office is empty and I have heard of an increase in burglaries happening. I am looking for a camera that has the following features:
I was looking at the Reolink Argus 2 but I have read many reviews stating the night vision is not good enough for face ID, and that the motion detection had a significant lag to it (one review stated something like a 2.5 second lag). Anyone have any thoughts on a recommended camera? Thank you :) [link] [comments] |
Need suggestions for security camera set up for home and garage. Posted: 05 May 2020 08:16 AM PDT Had a break in last night and walked into my garage while the burglar was still hiding in there. Currently while still unsettled, I decided it time for a camera system. Looking for something easy to install as I have no experience and something with some range so I can have it cover interior, and exterior of the house, and one in the interior of the garage. In total looking to hook up 4 or 5 cameras. The garage is about 50 feet from the house. Not sure if that distance would make a huge difference in what I'm looking for. Is there any set ups that are wireless and just require a power source? Looking for something I can acess with my phone. Bonus points if it has night vision and motion detectors. [link] [comments] |

Looking to upgrade 10+ year security cameras Posted: 05 May 2020 01:35 PM PDT I'm looking to upgrade my home security cameras. I have a DVR already that I've been replacing every 3-5 years and it's been great so far. I'm looking to purchase 4-5 new cameras. I do have stock 1080p cameras that came with my security system but I'm not too convinced these stock cameras are worth the quality. Are there are third party cameras I can buy that are full 1080p? Also, I'm interested in purchasing one or two that has audio, will this work? The preference is the round ball cameras as opposed to the directional pointing forward ones. The price per camera would be around $100. The system I have currently is: LOREX 1080P HD MPX DVR. I believe they're BNC type cameras. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Security Camera with Personal Cloud Storage capabilities Posted: 05 May 2020 04:07 AM PDT Hi all, I am looking for a security camera, that supports at least the following: a-Nightvision b-Movement detection (trigger picture and/or video upon movement only, to avoid constant recording) Now the tricky part, is that I am looking for the following feature as mandatory: c-Ability to save to SD card and/or to personal cloud storage (not paid membership or aws or something like that). It is ok if the personal cloud storage is not handled directly with a proprietary software but allows integration with OwnCloud or similar. If point c can be solved with some tricks I am fine. Example: Wifi SD Card (therefore the camera needs to accept SD Cards, which are not Micro SD) which would save content to a cloud server ? Thanks for any advise. [link] [comments] |
