Unauthorized persons tailgating residents coming & going through lobby doors PROBLEM

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 07:33 AM PDT

    Hi,

I hope this is ok to post here. Its not a problem for single resident type homes, but for our condo BUILDING.

We have a problem where people come in to steal mail by tailgating random people. Even if most of building residents dont let strangers in, the problem still lies when delivery people or others come by and the outsiders follow behind them.

I was wondering if anyone had a solution to dealing with such problems? Truly appreciate any tips!

    Little spooked. Security camera recommendations?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 09:03 AM PDT

Tldr; Had a suspicious encounter with someone outside my door. Looking for unobtrusive security system for a rental, must be wireless per lease, prefer lower cost for temporary use until we move again. Currently have August SmartLock for the door more for efficiency of not using a key as opposed to security. Full story below:

My S/O and I are both working from home and are just home in general 90% of the time due to COVID. This morning, after my S/O left to take our dogs on their morning walk, I happened to walk out of the office and there was a person at the door, kind of half-turned around as if they were looking behind them. At first without being able to see their face, I thought it was my S/O getting home and just looking behind him to hurry the dogs up to the door. Similar build, same hair color, wearing a hat, etc. but as I started walking towards the door to let him and the dogs in, I realized this person was not my S/O and that they had gloves in one hand. I thought "Oh, maybe maintenance?" because we rent a duplex. I started to duck into the laundry room to grab a jacket and put some shoes on before opening the door. At this point, the person looked up and we made eye contact. I was already mid-step into the laundry room so just continued to get the jacket and shoes. Not overly alarmed at this point, but a little annoyed at having an unexpected visitor.

When I came back out (couldn't have been more than 30 seconds at the most and I feel was probably more like 10), the person was gone. My stomach immediately sank and I then felt this was suspicious. They did not knock or ring the bell initially, I just happened to be walking across the hall and glanced at the door to see them, and I also find it concerning that they saw someone was home and then left. I take this to mean they weren't needing to speak to someone or weren't wanting to be seen. Also, not sure what was going on with the gloves? All in all, don't have warm and fuzzies about it. I did call the police to report a non-emergency and give a description and they said they would send someone out to patrol the area. Grateful for that but obviously there was no real crime committed and they might not see the person anyway so not a lot of peace of mind.

Anyways, we've gotten into a morning routine and my S/O takes the dogs out at about the same time each morning, he does leave in his car and drives them to a walking trail nearby. Sometimes will pick up coffee. Usually gone for about 30-45 mins. I'm thinking this stranger might have noticed a pattern in my S/O's behavior and not realized that someone else lives here/would be home during that time. Preferring to believe this as the alternative is that this person knew a woman is home alone from X to Y so that'd be a good time to show up.😖 Optimistically hoping he was more spooked than I was and seeing someone was actually home is a deterrent. Realistically, you never know someone's intentions + never know when it could be you + he's not the only suspicious person out there so could be someone else next week.

We rent a duplex, hoping to be here for about 6 more months and then buy a home. Not wanting to splurge too much on a temporary system for this small space and then turn around and get a new integrated one for a home, but obviously safety is priceless. Not even sure where to begin figuring out the features we're looking for, but I do know we are not able to do any re-wiring or have visible wires at the rental so wireless is a must. Fairly tech-savvy but not looking to monitor our front door 24/7 just because. I think we're wanting something that will alert for movement? Not sure. What do you suggest?

ONVIF Motion Detect Events + Linux

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 05:08 AM PDT

I have a few IP cameras with ONVIF and builtin motion detection. As far as I understand, the IP camera exposes some sort of webservice with SOAP which handles motion detection events.

The IP camera then periodically sends messages like "Motion: false", "Motion: true".

There is a Python library called ONVIFCamera which apparently handles communication with the IP camera and captures events. However, I could not get it to work and keep getting what is described here:

No element 'PullMessages' in namespace http://docs.oasis-open.org/wsrf/rw-2

Is there an easier way to take advantage of the motion detection IP cameras come with and be able to capture these events using Linux scripts?

Edit: After wasting so much time, it turns out that the PIP version is buggy, but downloading directly from GitHub and then running python setup.py install fixes the error. A symbolic link may be necessary for the WSDL files to be where they're expected to.

Hikvision HWC-C120-D/W, how to configure sd-card?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 05:52 AM PDT

    Hi,

I recently bought a Hikvision HWC-C120-D/W. It seems to be working fine, I can view the live stream via Wi-Fi in the "Hik-Connect"-app on my phone. Now I would like it to record to an SD card. I plugged one in but have no idea how to configure it. In the app there only seems to be an "initialize memory card" option, which I performed. Any ideas? Thanks.

    Advice

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 08:31 AM PDT

Hi experts I would like to know if Alexa or Google can become a home alarm system. Can either of them become hubs and be able to directly connect and communicate with window/door sensors, motion detectors and siren? Can I lets say use blink/wyze cameras as motion detectors and connect to an echo or alexa device, thanks in advance

    Anyone running DW Spectrum?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 02:23 PM PDT

I was recommended DW Spectrum a while back to manage my 4 IP cams. I got a trial and liked it a lot but never finally switched over from Blue Iris. I went to switch over the other day, but it seems they've moved to some kind of cloud interface. It's asking for server info, which I obviously do not have since I never set it up. I contacted their customer service and another email i had for an employee, but neither returned my emails. I was hoping someone could clear this confusion up for me, cause i really want to switch over.

Concern of burglar returning.. Panic Button ideas?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 09:21 AM PDT

We had some small items go missing after several contractors worked at our home without much scrutiny. Our bad. We trusted them didn't micromanage them, now $300 of stuff went gone. They all denied it and are offended and we arent going to use them anymore. BUT of course we are now scared and think they're going to come back.

Please convince me this isnt likely

Or what can I do? The biggest concern is that they would break in while we are home. at least we live in a good neighborhood with several retired and current cops and firemen living within a few houses. If I had a home alarm that just blared an alarm sound outside, my neighbors would investigate/help and at least scare off anyone intruding.   My idea is to have several buttons around the house that we can press to sound the alarm at any time. Perhaps hidden so we have plausible deniability if burglar demands we turn it off. ie 'i can't its a motion alarm' etc. at least long enough to force bad guys to leave.   I don't want a professional paid monthly security system. I have some wyze cams but they are useless if bad guys come while I'm sleeping. Please help--my fears and plans. Thank you

Setting up POE cameras using Milestone XProtect...

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 06:29 PM PDT

I'm new to the home security realm, but after some research I've finally begun setting up my own home system. However, I need some guidance on actually setting it up. I've acquired two AXIS cameras - an AXIS M3026 & an AXIS M5013. I'm powering both cameras with an 8 port SG250-08HP POE Smart Switch. My first port is connected to my home router. The second & third are connected to my AXIS cameras. A cable from an available ethernet port on my router runs to a desktop computer running Milestone XProtect which I plan to use as an NVR/VMS. This is where I've run into issues. What do I do next to get everything up and running. I apologize in advance for what is probably an obvious answer. Thank you for any help you can offer.

    Help choosing camera system

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 06:02 PM PDT

Home camera system( 4-6 cameras should be good)

Cloud storage or continuous recording to a storage server in my house.

Wireless would be awesome but im not afraid of running cables.

    Hi resolution. 1080 ideal

    Good to record at night.

I live in Colorado, so they should last through our different weather systems.

I've looked at nest cameras, but im not sure how I feel about giigles spying on us.

I understand the price might be up there. So I'll put my budget at 1000 max.

    Thanks!!
