Testing possible locations for PoE camera?

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 09:35 PM PDT

Before I start drilling holes into my house I wanted to test the camera locations somehow. Do people just run cat 5 cable to the location? Or is there an easier way? The cameras are PoE so I have to plug into the NVR switch right?

Help choosing doorbell camera: ezviz Vs yousee Vs eufy

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 12:17 AM PDT

Hey all, I'm trying to choose a doorbell camera and would appreciate some advice. Ideally I would prefer a hardwired poe option without a subscription, but there don't seem to be many options out there. I don't mind compromising on some features, but would like to avoid a subscription service and would prefer something without a battery. Obviously reliability is important. Doorbird is a bit out of my price range.

I'm currently trying to choose between the following:

Ezviz DB1 Yousee SD-M5 Eufy video doorbell (wired)

Any advice or experiences would be appreciated!

Looking for a good solid door for outside garage entry

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 07:31 PM PDT

The current door and frame has been there for 30 years, literally starting to rot.

Looking to upgrade the frame, door, anything else with security in mind.

Any suggestion on where to start? I'd prefer not to spend over 1k for the door it self

Closing on Home Tomorrow with Vivint

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 10:36 PM PDT

    From Seller:

Vivint - home security system Our service contract is through 9/25/2023 and he can easily take it over We have already paid for all the equipment (2 cameras, access panel, 2 keyless door locks, 2 Nest thermostats, 12 door and window sensors, 2 glass break sensors) Monthly monitoring fee is $41.47 We have already provided our authorization and his name to them should he want to take over service Call the Moves & Take-overs dept. 855-441-4573 (if for some reason that doesn't work, main number is 800-216-5232)

So I'm pretty much curious on everyone's thoughts. I love the fact that everything is already here and that the equipments paid for. I've heard terrible things from all major security monitor services but this monthly payment looks surprisingly decent. Any thoughts? I personally would want a monitoring service that I could access and maintain on my phone.

Also there is a Night Owl System

    From Seller:

house was built with a 7-camera system wired. This system is a NIGHT OWL system and the 7 cameras are wired to the cabinet adjacent to the fireplace (LH side) with an HDMI cable that is routed from that cabinet to the HDMI outlet located just above the mantle for you to connect it directly to your TV as a video source. The Buyer will need to buy a NIGHT OWL hard drive to store the images/videos. The entire system is in tact with the exception of the Hard Drive. This system does not require a monthly subscription.

What would you do with all this equipment? Thanks in advance

TLDR: 2 security systems that are paid for, Vivint and Night Owl. Do I keep them or replace them?

First Time homeowner looking to buy security system

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 09:21 AM PDT

    Hey all,

My husband and I recently purchased our first home and were able to move in last week. We know that our new city has higher crime than where we lived before so we have discussed getting some sort of home security system installed. Problem is we really don't know much about it so I'm looking for some advice.

There was a sales rep that dropped by unannounced yesterday attempting to sell us Vivint. I felt uncomfortable with the interaction for a number of reasons, but I can't say that I was disinterested. However, I can't seem to see the value in paying for Vivint specifically. According to him, the service is only monitored if you have motion sensors, which we wouldn't want due to our two large-four legged friends, but would still be a monthly subscription fee of ~$75 depending on how many cameras we wanted. I had him break down the fee for me which is essentially- $29 for the subscription(still unclear what that actually does) and $45 for the equipment fee. According to the rep, the equipment price of ~$1500 is financed so after a certain amount of time, it would be paid off and the monthly price would drop from $75 to $29. My problem is that when I asked him what the monthly fee would be if I paid for the equipment up-front, he said it would be $45/mo. I fail to see how these number add up and why I should buy/pay for a service that we would need to monitor ourselves anyway.

Now, I've done some quick searches through BestBuy and Amazon and I've seen systems like Ring, Google Nest, Arlo, Simplisafe...etc that run anywhere from $300-$1000 for a system depending on what equipment I was looking for that have optional subscription services range anywhere from $7-$20/mo. I think the best fit for us would be a doorbell cam, and 4 cameras for the backyard, garage, and sides of house, with door sensors on the backdoor, front door, and door leading into the garage. I also want to make sure it's a system that can connect to our smartphones.

What have others done for a security system? Is it realistic to think we could buy our own equipment through Amazon or BestBuy then set it up and monitor it ourselves? Should we be considering going through a company like Vivint more seriously? If so, what would I be paying for exactly?

tldr; first time homeowner looking for the best fit for a security system.

    Cobra surveillance System

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 09:34 PM PDT

Does anybody have this system from harbor freight and if so what app do you have to monitor it on your phone. I tried the rxcamview, but I have to reboot the system every night to get it back online. Thanks.

    Lost my panel key

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 05:38 PM PDT

We bought a new home recently and have an older Honeywell-Ademco panel i want to re use with a Konnected kit. However, at some point during our remodel, i misplaced the key to the panel door.

It looks just like this one Same beige panel with a simple keyed camlock.

Any idea if someone sells replacement keys for these, i imagine theyre all the same? Is there a simple way to pick it? Or do I need to drill it?

Which POE CCTV system should I go for?

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 05:33 AM PDT

I currently have a 3 camera Hikvision system set up on my house which was installed by the previous occupants, the software itself is fine to use if a bit slow and clunky.

My main issue however is with the cameras themselves, while good quality they do mist up at night so every few weeks I'll have to go up and clean them, put some anti mist in and seal them with tape, I've also tried putting silica packets in but they will all mist up again.

I'm now wondering whether to keep the nvr and replace the cameras with other hikvision ones hoping they'll stay fog free or replace the whole system for something else. If I did replace the system however I'd want to keep it POE as it's all already wired up.

What do you guys think as I'm not so familiar with CCTV?

Opinion about existing ADT system va anything new or upgrading it

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 09:51 AM PDT

So we bought a house for we lied this year and previous owners had ADT system (a pretty old one with no cameras) with just doors and windows monitoring.

Now we are thinking of either upgrading that to include motion sensor cameras with ADT or to pick up a new vendor.

Any suggestions or tips please ?

What are some good home security systems that offer a monitoring service?

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 08:23 AM PDT

I have several windows, patio doors, 2 levels, but the stickler is I have satellite internet.

    For example would Simplsafe work?

Are there remote locks that could be used with a yard fence/gate?

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 12:05 PM PDT

I'm looking for a way to lock our gate overnight without a toggle/manual flip for the deadbolt on either side. Our fence can easily be reached through, so no option for a manual open would work. Looking for it to be open to the public (mail, packages) during the day & secured at night remotely.

PoE IP cameras vs WiFi IP cameras.

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 08:04 AM PDT

I just bought a new house and planned on upgrading the security and network. I plan on running eth cables to every room anyway so I figured why not run PoE cables to locations for the IP cameras. Then I got into a debate over security with a friend of mine who is generally a lot smarter than I am when it comes to security.

He says WiFi cameras are just fine provided I still follow all the same best practices like putting them on their own vlan and setting a really strong password for the ssid. He makes sense to me and it would save me some money to go with a normal switch instead of a PoE switch but now I'm torn. I know at the very least, even without cracking wifi passwords, that I could spoof a MAC address and perform a denial of service to one of my wifi cameras which is just as bad a security risk as not having a security camera at all. But that's the only thing I could think of assuming my entire network isn't compromised by a bad actor which I realistically think is very improbable.

My other concern was more around efficiency. All those wifi cameras streaming back to my NVR sucks up bandwidth though it looks like that traffic might be negligible if my 1000mbs fiber internet will transfer to the new house. But presumably all that traffic still goes through my AP, even if the AP is broadcasting 2 separate SSIDs. Then the traffic would be segmented by vlan at the switch. So I'd still expect slower wifi for all my other devices like phones and TVs etc as they still use the same AP.

What am I missing or what should I be aware of before making a decision on PoE vs WiFi cameras? Looking for the most reasonably secure option for a smart home without getting carried away and increasing costs needlessly.
